Telecommuting is a win-win for employees and employers, resulting in higher morale and job satisfaction and lower employee stress and turnover, according to a team of psychologists who examined 20 years of research on flexible work arrangements.

Led by Ravi S. Gajendran and David A. Harrison from Pennsylvania State University, the meta-analysis of 46 studies about telecommuting involved 12,833 employees. The typical telecommuter examined in the analysis was a manager or a professional from a company's information technology, sales or marketing departments. The average age of the telecommuter was 39; men and women were equally represented.

What is telecommuting? It's an alternative work arrangement in which an employee performs job tasks at a location, usually a home office, that is different from the primary or central workplace for at least a portion of their work schedule. Telecommuters use electronic media to interact with others inside and outside the organization.

The top 5 reasons to telecommute:

1. It provides employees with more control over how they do their work.
2. Telecommuting employees have greater job satisfaction.
3. Telecommuters are less motivated to leave the company.
4. There is less daily stress in large part because of an improved work-family balance.
5. Telecommuters tend to get higher job performance ratings by their supervisors.

Gajendran and Harrison found that while there is a popular belief that "face time" in the office is essential for good working relationships, telecommuting didn't cause such relationships to suffer--up to a point. Telecommuters who worked away from the office for three or more days a week did admit there was some worsening of co-worker relationships; however, their job performance was not impacted negatively nor did they think their careers suffered from less physical presence in the office.

The study findings were reported in the Journal of Applied Psychology, published by the American Psychological Association (APA).
